Just Transition in Valea Jiului

Discover our actions dedicated to adopting just transition in the coal-dependent area from Valea Jiului, Romania.

The European Union has committed to phasing out coal-based energy by 2030. The amount of carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas that increases global temperature) emitted by coal-fired power plants is particularly high. Romania has announced that it will gradually exit from coal energy until 2032. But what do the alternatives look like for areas like Valea Jiului, which are almost completely dependent on coal? And how can a fair transition be achieved?
We believe that solutions can be identified at the intersection between entrepreneurial and NGO initiatives. Thus, we organized a series of events, together with EIT Climate KIC and Post Coal Future Lab.

Bootcamp on Sustainable Alternatives

On November 12th, we organized a bootcamp for identifying sustainable solutions in the coal-dependent area of Valea Jiului, Romania.

We continued with an online hackathon, where the solutions outlined in the Bootcamp were better defined and then presented in the form of a pitch.
